Five Great Free Fantasy Books By Female Authors

Authors like J. R. R. Tolkien, George R. R. Martin, Terry Goodkind and Michael Moorcock have become household names for fans of the fantasy genre, but the industry is definitely not just male dominated. Woman like J.K. Rowling, Anne McCaffrey, Robin Hobb and many others have definitely left their mark on the genre as well. However, while there may be more woman writing fantasy books than ever before these days, you'll also find plenty of good fantasy ebooks that are available completely free. Here are just a few examples of fantasy books by women that are definitely worth checking out.

The Counterpane Fairy

by Katharine Pyle

Fantasy novels can be sprawling epics with pages that number in the hundreds, if not thousands, so readers who want to ease into the genre will appreciate The Counterpane Fairy by Katherine Pyle. She wrote more than 30 books during her career, but The Counterpane Fairy was amongst her first and most beloved. The book is about a sick young boy who is visited by a fairy who entertains him with stories as he recovers from his illness.

The Element of Fire

by Martha Wells

Although not as old as the other books on this list, The Element of Fire by Martha Wells serves as a good introduction to the work of this author. The book, which was published in 1993, was her first and she has since gone on to write many more. In addition to her fantasy novels, she has also written a number of young adult novels as well as media tie-ins for popular licences such as Star Wars and Stargate. The Elements of Fire is set in a rich fantasy world and features the type of political intrigue that will appeal to fans of Game of Thrones.

Kabumpo In Oz

by Ruth Plumly Thompson

After the death of L. Frank Baum, other authors wrote books that formed part of the Oz series, including this one by Ruth Plumly Thompson. Kabumpo In Oz is actually her second Oz book, although the first, The Royal book of Oz, was still credited to Baum. This book tells the story of Prince Pompadore of Pumperdink, who has a shocking surprise on his eighteenth birthday when his cake explodes to reveal a scroll along with some magical items. Things get even worse when he finds out that he only has seven days to wed a proper princess or he will lose his entire kingdom.

The Land of the Blue Flower

by Frances Hodgson Burnett

The Land of the Blue Flower is another short, but very uplifting fantasy novel from the same author as The Secret Garden. While it may appeal to younger readers, the message in this story is one that readers of all ages can appreciate. It tells the story of a young king who discovers a rare blue flower and discovers that it has the power to transform people from selfish to compassionate. The Land of the Blue Flower might be one of the more obscure books by Frances Hodgson Burnett, but still captures her wonderful imagination and flair for storytelling.

Martin Pippin in the Apple Orchard

by Eleanor Farjeon

Martin Pippin in the Apple Orchard is one of the most notable and endearing books by Eleanor Farjeon. Although many people consider it a book aimed at children, it actually features plenty of themes that adults will appreciate. The titular martin Pippin is a wandering minstrel who, at the behest of a ploughman, journeys to an apple orchard to rescue a young woman. As she is guarded by six sworn virgins, Martin has to win their confidence first by telling them love stories.
