Four Free Horror Ebooks Written After 2000

In addition to a large number of classic horror books that are now in the public domain, readers fond of thrills and chills can also find more contemporary fare for free. Things that go bump in the night has been a firm literary favorite of both authors and readers for a long time, which means there are plenty of stories to choose from. So, if you are ever in the mood to experience the adrenaline rush that a good horror story can provide, then take your pick from any of the free ebooks on this list. All of them were written after 2000 and, who knows, you might even pick up a survival tip or two in the event that your worst nightmares ever come true.

Jenny Pox: The Paranormals Book 1

by J.L. Bryan

Readers in search of a good horror story in the same mould as “Carrie” by Stephen King will enjoy Jenny Pox by J.L. Bryan. It is the story of Jenny Morton, who is an eighteen-year old teen who is extremely careful  never to touch anyone. She does this because of her ability to transmit a deadly supernatural plague through touch. Unsurprisingly, this dark secret has caused Jenny a lifetime of loneliness. However, things quickly change when Jenny not only encounters a boy who she is able to touch, but also discovers that another girl in town has even more sinister powers. Jenny Pox might sound like it is just another young adult book, but it does contain some very strong horror elements and it is certainly not for the faint of heart.

Surviving The Evacuation: Book 1: London

by Frank Tayell

Zombies have lost some of their scariness due to the fact that they are such a common sight in popular culture these days, but with this book Frank Tayell proves that it is still possible to make the walking dead frightening. It is set in the wasteland that was once England, before a spreading infection  caused it to swarm with the undead. The lead character, Bill Wright, saw all of this happen from his window, but was unable to join the evacuation due to a broken leg. Initially, Bill waits to be rescued, but he is soon forced to accept that it is not coming and unless he wants to starve to death he is going to have to make his own escape, even if the odds are against him.

by Kealan Patrick Burke

Some stories span hundreds of pages, but are forgotten as soon as you’ve turned the last one while others, like Underneath, can be read in one sitting, but will stay with you for long afterwards. It is also a tale that shows that you don’t need monsters or supernatural elements to make your horror stories disturbing. Since it is a short story, it is hard to explain what happens without giving away too much, but it deals with a boy named Dean asking out a girl named Stephanie on a date. The problem is that Dean is bullied into doing it with threats of violence and Stephanie is a girl who the school shuns due to her disfigurement. However, nobody could have predicted what happened next.

The Variant Effect: Part One: Skin Eaters

by G. Wells Taylor

The Variant Effect is another interesting spin on the zombie genre where a new wonder drug is the cause of the catastrophe. Initially, the drug became a hit because it helped everyone regulate their emotions, but nobody was prepared for the side effects that followed. It is obviously not good for your company image if your customers turn into flesh eating monsters, so the issue was swiftly and brutally dealt with by corporate strike teams. However, twenty years later there seems to be another outbreak coming. Thankfully, there is one man who survived the initial outbreak, who might be able to safe humanity. Unfortunately, he’s not just washed up, but also morally ambiguous, prone to violence and intoxicated most of the time.
